Serenity of relaxation
I'm a really diverse person when it comes to my taste in metal, and honestly, music in general. That's a thing I have in common with Devin. Devin is one of those few musicians that gets it - he knows what true music is. He doesn't create music to satisfy fans or make loads of money. He creates albums to create art. This album is a testament to that fact. Devin's previous work has been incredible, but I've never seen him be so honest and true to his core. A musician's heart. This entire project captures the heart and soul of a musician, and THAT is why I think the Devin Townsend Project is his best band to date.

Ghost is not what I'd necessarily consider a metal album, but it still has that spirit and energy of metal, albeit in a calmer, serene expression. This album, in essence, takes the distorted guitars from Devin's 2001 album, Terria, and adds elements of The Hummer (2006). This album has 'ambient' written ALL over it.

Despite the general ambient sound of this album, it still has really diverse types of ambient sounds. Songs like Heart Baby and Feather give the feel of being out in the middle of nature. However, the almost-three minute song Kawaii, sounds like an ambient version of a contemporary song you'd hear from modern artists, with beautiful acoustic guitar and nice vocals. Then, songs such as the title track, Ghost, as well as Blackberry, almost sound like something you'd hear at a classic southern revival meeting or something like that. It just has that kind of rhythm.

There are even times where parts of the songs on this album remind me of a Native American-style song without the vocals. This album is clearly focused on nature, similar to Terria.

Outside of the music itself, all of the Devin Townsend Project albums come in a jewel case, but the jewel case is inside of a separate slip-case with different artwork. The artwork you see here on the website is just the art on the slipcover. The album artwork inside is a long-exposure picture of rocks and water on a shore at sunset or sunrise, with a glowing light floating over the water. The artwork inside the book also carries this light in every single picture. The book art includes several different forms of nature with this light in it, further cementing the feel of this album being about nature and relaxation.

To be honest, the relaxation I get from this album when I need to relax can only be achieved by one other album: Cartographer by the epic/classical music group ES Posthumus. This album would be perfect to take out with you into the middle of a calm and serene natural area and listen to it on your own while relaxing and doing nothing else. The only issue with this album is how listenable it is. You have to be in the mood to sit down and relax to this music. If you're looking for brutal guitar riffs, incredible solos, and the combo of screams and clean vocals as common with Devin, this album isn't for you. (In that case, I'd recommend Deconstruction, Addicted, or Epicloud if you want to listen to a DTP album) But if you're open to different forms of music created to be true art, this album is a great release and almost certainly would be great for you.

Simply an awesome release. 8.5/10. :)
