Metallica unveils its 9th studio album, Death Magnetic. The band's first album in 5 years, Death Magnetic is also its first with renowned producer Rick Rubin and first with bassist Robert Trujillo. Heavy and thrashy, unafraid to embrace the band's past yet move into the future, Death Magnetic, says Kirk Hammett, is the "best album we've put out in 15 years." (2008)

Good but not great
If you are not a diehard fan you should be choosing to buy their earlier records which are very similar but offer better songs and more quality.

St. Anger be gone
Metallica's back with a new album. Somehow in the last five years they learned how to write songs again. St. Anger this is not. To me, it's a cross between Justice and Load. Thrash riffs are back as heard on on My Apolcalypse. Hell, some of these songs could've been on Justice and they wouldn't have sounded out of place at all. If you liked old Metallica then chances are that this is the album you've wanted to hear them make since 1988.

#1 Album of 2008
Definitely the comeback album of the year, if not of all time. This is the album that got me
back into Metallica, my favorite band of all time when I was 13 years old, who I have not listened to in 17 years. The album is sooooo good, so heavy, so catchy; it has everything. This is the album they should’ve done after “…And Justice For All”. I never thought my interest in Metallica would be sparked again. I went back and got all the old albums, and was surprised I still knew all the lyrics to songs I hadn’t heard in so long. I also got those Load albums and couldn’t believe they were as bad as everyone said they were. Metallica went back to their original sound, and in doing so, regained a fan. I went to the first show of the US Magnetic tour here in Phoenix, and was in awe of how amazing they were. My first ever concert was a Metallica show my dad took me to way back in 1992. I never thought I’d be able to enjoy something so much like I did when I was a kid. And I think that speaks volumes about what a great record this is.

Almost back to form
Much better than St. Anger, but still not as good as the older albums.
